Hindu Rituals ยท Updated 6 October 2026 ยท 4 min read
Satyanarayan Puja is the worship of Lord Vishnu as Satya Narayan โ the Lord of Truth. It is one of the most widely performed home pujas in India and among Indian families abroad, done on Purnima (full moon) and on happy occasions like a griha pravesh, a wedding, a new job or a birthday. The puja ends with the Satyanarayan Katha and the sharing of prasad, and it can be done by anyone โ no special caste, age or gender is required.
Best dates for Satyanarayan Puja in 2026
Purnima is the most popular day. The remaining full moons of 2026 are:
| Purnima | Date | Day |
|---|---|---|
| Sharad Purnima | 26 October 2026 | Monday |
| Kartik Purnima | 24 November 2026 | Tuesday |
| Margashirsha Purnima | 23 December 2026 | Wednesday |
Ekadashi, Sankranti and Thursdays are also considered good. For an occasion such as a griha pravesh, the date of the occasion itself is fine โ the katha says the vrat may be done on any day with sincere devotion. See our Ekadashi guide for upcoming Ekadashi dates.
Where the Satyanarayan Katha comes from
The katha is traditionally attributed to the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana. It is narrated by Suta to the sages at Naimisharanya: sage Narada, seeing human suffering, asks Lord Vishnu for a simple way to remove it, and Vishnu teaches him the Satyanarayan vrat.
Satyanarayan Puja samagri list
- Picture or idol of Lord Satyanarayan (Vishnu), or a Shaligram
- Wooden chowki and yellow or red cloth
- Kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut
- Banana plant stems or leaves to make a small mandap (common in Maharashtra and North India)
- Tulsi leaves โ essential, because Vishnu's naivedya is not complete without tulsi
- Panchamrit: milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar
- Roli, haldi, kumkum, chandan, akshat (unbroken rice), mauli, janeu
- Flowers and a garland, betel leaves and supari
- Dhoop, ghee diya, camphor for aarti
- Fruits, especially bananas
- Prasad: sheera (rava, ghee, sugar, milk and banana) in Maharashtra, or panjiri (roasted wheat flour with ghee and sugar) in North India. Many families prepare it in the sawa (one-and-a-quarter) measure.
- Dakshina for the pandit
Step-by-step Satyanarayan Puja vidhi
- Preparation. Bathe, wear clean clothes and set up the chowki facing east. Make the banana-leaf mandap if your family follows that custom, and place the deity in the centre.
- Achaman and sankalp. Sip water three times with the names of Vishnu, then take the sankalp โ your name, gotra, place, date and the purpose of the puja.
- Ganesh puja. Lord Ganesha is worshipped first to remove obstacles.
- Kalash (Varuna) puja. The kalash is worshipped as the seat of the sacred waters.
- Navagraha puja. The nine planets are invoked, usually with betel nuts placed on a cloth or on rice heaps.
- Satyanarayan puja. Lord Satyanarayan is worshipped with the sixteen offerings (shodashopachara): invocation, seat, water, bath with panchamrit, clothes, janeu, chandan, flowers and tulsi, dhoop, deep and naivedya.
- Katha. All five chapters of the Satyanarayan Katha are read while the family listens with akshat or flowers in hand.
- Aarti. "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" or "Jai Lakshmi Ramana" is sung with camphor.
- Prasad. The prasad is offered to the Lord and then shared with everyone present. Some families also perform a short havan.
The Satyanarayan Katha in brief
- Chapter 1 โ Narada's question. Narada travels to the mortal world, sees suffering and asks Lord Vishnu for a remedy. Vishnu describes the Satyanarayan vrat and its benefits.
- Chapter 2 โ The poor Brahmin and the woodcutter. A poor Brahmin of Kashi performs the vrat and his poverty ends. A woodcutter who sees the puja performs it too and also prospers.
- Chapter 3 โ The merchant's vow. A merchant promises to perform the puja if he is blessed with a child. A daughter, Kalavati, is born, but he keeps postponing his vow โ and later finds himself falsely imprisoned in a distant kingdom.
- Chapter 4 โ The merchant's lie. Released, the merchant tells a disguised holy man that his boat carries only creepers and leaves, and the cargo turns into exactly that. He repents and it is restored. At home, Kalavati rushes to meet her husband without taking the prasad, and his boat sinks; when she returns and accepts the prasad, the boat reappears.
- Chapter 5 โ King Tungadhwaj. A king ignores the prasad offered by cowherds and loses his sons and wealth. When he repents and performs the puja, everything is restored.
The message running through the katha is simple: keep your promises, speak the truth and never disrespect prasad.
Doing Satyanarayan Puja abroad
- Banana leaves and tulsi. Banana leaves are sold frozen in most Asian and Indian grocery stores. If fresh tulsi is not available, use a tulsi plant grown indoors or a few dried tulsi leaves.
- Weekend timing. Many families abroad perform the puja on the weekend nearest to Purnima. The katha permits any day, so this is perfectly acceptable.
- Havan indoors. If you include a havan, keep it small and ventilated โ apartment smoke alarms are sensitive.
- Pandit by video. A pandit can guide the whole puja over a video call while your family performs the offerings at home. Book a Satyanarayan Puja online or in person.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best day for Satyanarayan Puja?
Purnima (full moon) is the most popular day. It is also done on Ekadashi, Sankranti and Thursdays, and on occasions such as griha pravesh, weddings, birthdays, a new job or a new business. The katha itself says the vrat can be done on any day with devotion.
Can Satyanarayan Puja be done in the evening?
Yes. Many families perform it in the evening, especially on Purnima, while others prefer the morning. What matters is a clean setting, the sankalp, the katha and respectfully sharing the prasad.
Can we do Satyanarayan Puja without a pandit?
Yes. Any devotee can perform it with a puja book that contains the vidhi and katha. A pandit is helpful for the Sanskrit mantras, the Navagraha and Kalash puja, and for larger family occasions.
How long does Satyanarayan Puja take?
Usually two to three hours including Ganesh puja, Kalash and Navagraha puja, the main puja, the five chapters of the katha, aarti and prasad. A shorter version without havan takes about 90 minutes.
Why is it important to accept the prasad?
The katha repeatedly warns against neglecting the prasad โ Kalavati's husband's boat sinks when she rushes off without it, and King Tungadhwaj suffers after refusing it. Everyone present should take at least a little.
