Griha Pravesh Puja: Vidhi, Samagri List & Muhurat Dates (Nov–Dec 2026)

Griha Pravesh is the puja performed when a family first enters a new home. It purifies the house, invokes Lord Ganesha, the Navagrahas and Vastu Purusha (the deity of the dwelling), and asks for peace and prosperity for everyone who will live there. The puja is done on an auspicious muhurat and usually includes kalash sthapana, Vastu puja, a havan and the ritual boiling of milk in the new kitchen.

The three types of Griha Pravesh

  • Apoorva — the first entry into a newly built or newly purchased home. This needs a proper muhurat.
  • Sapoorva — re-entering your home after a long absence, such as a long stay abroad.
  • Dwandwah — returning to a home after major renovation or after an event such as a fire or flood.

Griha Pravesh muhurat dates: November–December 2026

Griha Pravesh dates are chosen from favourable months, tithis and nakshatras, and avoid Chaturmas, which ends with Devutthana Ekadashi on 20 November 2026. The dates listed by several panchang sources for the end of 2026 are:

Month Commonly listed dates
November 2026 11, 14, 21, 25, 26
December 2026 2, 3, 4, 11, 12

Why other websites show different dates. Some lists also include dates from about 16 December onwards. Many North Indian panchangs treat the month when the Sun is in Sagittarius (Kharmas, about mid-December to mid-January) as unsuitable, while some regional calendars do not. Panchangs also calculate for different cities. Always have your pandit confirm the date and exact time for your city — this matters even more if you live abroad, because the muhurat depends on local sunrise.

For 2027, published lists disagree too much to repeat here. In general, January after Makar Sankranti, February, March (before Kharmas), May and June are the main Griha Pravesh months in North Indian calendars.

What makes a muhurat good for Griha Pravesh

  • Months: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are traditionally preferred.
  • Tithis: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi of the bright fortnight.
  • Nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati.
  • Avoid: Chaturmas, Kharmas, Adhik Maas, Pitru Paksha, eclipses, and Tuesdays in many families.

Griha Pravesh puja vidhi, step by step

  1. Prepare the house. Clean it thoroughly, hang a toran of mango leaves or marigolds at the entrance, and make a rangoli. Draw a swastika and Shubh-Labh at the door.
  2. Entry. At the muhurat, the family enters with the right foot first. The lady of the house often carries a kalash of water or milk. Some families break a coconut at the threshold.
  3. Ganesh puja and sankalp. Lord Ganesha is worshipped first, and the sankalp is taken in the family's name and gotra.
  4. Punyahavachan and kalash sthapana. The house is purified with sanctified water sprinkled in every room.
  5. Navagraha and Vastu puja. The nine planets and Vastu Purusha are worshipped so that the home is free of planetary and directional doshas. See our Vastu Shanti puja guide for more.
  6. Havan. A havan with ahutis for Ganesha, the Navagrahas and Vastu Devata fills the house with sacred smoke and mantras.
  7. Milk boiling. In the new kitchen, milk is boiled in a new vessel until it overflows — a sign that the home will overflow with plenty. The first sweet dish is cooked and offered.
  8. Satyanarayan Puja (optional) and aarti, then prasad and a meal for family, guests and the pandit.

Griha Pravesh samagri

You will need a kalash with mango leaves and a coconut, a toran, puja items (roli, haldi, akshat, mauli, flowers), panchamrit, havan items (kund, mango wood, havan samagri, ghee), a new vessel and milk for the kitchen ritual, and fruits and sweets. See the full Griha Pravesh samagri checklist, which you can print or save as a PDF.

Griha Pravesh for a new home abroad

  • Muhurat for your city. Your pandit should calculate the muhurat for the city where the house is — not India.
  • Havan and smoke alarms. In North American and UK homes, a small havan is best done near an open window or on a patio, or replaced by a lamp and mantras. Tell your pandit in advance.
  • Online or in India. A pandit can guide your family's Griha Pravesh live by video, or perform the Vastu and Navagraha puja in India in your name. Read online puja for NRIs or ask us for a quote.

Many families also perform Satyanarayan Puja after moving in.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Griha Pravesh muhurat dates in November–December 2026?

Dates listed by several panchang sources are 11, 14, 21, 25 and 26 November and 2, 3, 4, 11 and 12 December 2026. Lists differ between regions and calendars, so have your pandit confirm the date and time for your city.

Can Griha Pravesh be done without a muhurat?

For a new home (Apoorva Griha Pravesh) a muhurat is strongly recommended. If you must move in urgently, families often move belongings in and perform the Griha Pravesh puja later on an auspicious date.

Which months are avoided for Griha Pravesh?

Chaturmas (from Devshayani Ekadashi in July to Devutthana Ekadashi in November), Kharmas (roughly mid-December to mid-January and mid-March to mid-April in North Indian calendars), Adhik Maas and Pitru Paksha are generally avoided.

Is Satyanarayan Puja done during Griha Pravesh?

Many families perform Satyanarayan Puja on the day of Griha Pravesh or soon after, as a thanksgiving for the new home. It is a common addition but not compulsory.

How long does Griha Pravesh puja take?

Usually two and a half to four hours, depending on whether Vastu puja, havan and Satyanarayan Katha are included.
