Vastu Shanti Puja: When It Is Needed, Vidhi, Samagri & Office Opening Pooja
Hindu Rituals · Updated 22 October 2026 · 2 min read
Vastu Shanti puja is a Vedic ritual to pacify Vastu Purusha — the deity of a building — and the deities of the eight directions, so that a home or workplace is free of directional (Vastu) doshas. It is performed when moving into a new home, after buying an older house, after major renovation, and at the opening of an office, shop or factory.
What is Vastu Purusha?
In Vastu Shastra, every plot is pictured as the body of Vastu Purusha, lying face-down with his head towards the north-east. His body is drawn as a square grid — the Vastu Purusha Mandala of 64 or 81 squares — with a presiding deity for each square. Brahma sits at the centre. Disturbing this order, through construction faults or the wrong use of a direction, is believed to bring unrest, and the Vastu Shanti puja restores harmony.
When to perform Vastu Shanti
- New home — before or along with Griha Pravesh.
- Older or resale property — when you buy and move into a house someone else has lived in.
- Renovation — after structural changes, a new floor or a major rebuild.
- Office opening pooja — for a new office, shop, clinic, factory or warehouse, often combined with Ganesh and Lakshmi puja.
- Persistent problems — when a family feels a lack of peace at home, alongside practical steps.
Vastu Shanti puja vidhi
- Muhurat and sankalp. The pandit fixes a muhurat and takes the sankalp with the family's or company's name, gotra and the address of the property.
- Ganesh puja, Punyahavachan and Kalash sthapana — purification of the place and the participants.
- Navagraha puja — the nine planets are worshipped on a mandala.
- Vastu Purusha Mandala puja — the Vastu mandala is drawn with coloured grains, and Vastu Purusha and the deities of the directions (Dikpalas) are invoked and worshipped.
- Vastu havan — ahutis are offered to Vastu Devata, the Navagrahas and the Dikpalas.
- Placement rituals — in many traditions a small copper or silver serpent, tortoise, the nine grains or a Vastu yantra are placed at a chosen spot, often the north-east or the foundation.
- Purnahuti, aarti and prasad, and daan for the pandits.
Office opening pooja
For a new office or shop, the Vastu Shanti is commonly combined with:
- Ganesh puja for a smooth start,
- Lakshmi and Kuber puja for prosperity, with the new account books or the cash counter worshipped,
- a short havan, and
- a Satyanarayan Katha in many North Indian and Gujarati businesses.
Samagri
Vastu Shanti uses the same core items as the Griha Pravesh samagri list — kalash, puja items, panchamrit, havan items and naivedya — plus the Vastu-specific items: navadhanya (nine grains), a Vastu yantra if your pandit uses one, and the small serpent and tortoise used in some traditions.
Vastu Shanti for homes abroad
Homes in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia are rarely built to Vastu, so many families choose a Vastu Shanti puja when they buy a house. A pandit can guide the puja live by video at your home, or perform it in India with your property address in the sankalp. See online puja for NRIs.
Frequently asked questions
When should Vastu Shanti puja be done?
Before or at the time of moving into a new home, after buying an old house, after major renovation or structural changes, when opening an office, shop or factory, and when a home is felt to have persistent unrest.
Is Vastu Shanti the same as Griha Pravesh?
No, though they are often done together. Griha Pravesh is the ritual entry into a new home; Vastu Shanti specifically pacifies Vastu Purusha and corrects directional doshas. Many pandits include a Vastu puja within the Griha Pravesh.
Can Vastu Shanti puja correct Vastu defects without breaking walls?
Vastu Shanti is the traditional spiritual remedy when structural changes are not possible. It is often combined with simple corrections such as placing a Vastu yantra or rearranging the puja room.
Can Vastu Shanti puja be done online?
Yes. A pandit can guide the puja at your home by video, or perform the Vastu Shanti in India in your name with your property's details in the sankalp.
