Akshaya Tritiya 2027 falls on Saturday, 8 May 2027. Akshaya means "imperishable". It is believed that prayers, charity and new beginnings on this day bring blessings that never diminish. Observed on the Tritiya (third day) of the bright half of Vaishakha, it is also called Akha Teej, and it is one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu year for buying gold, starting a business, a griha pravesh or a wedding.

Why Akshaya Tritiya is special
Many sacred events are associated with this day in Hindu tradition:
- Parashurama Jayanti โ the birth of Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, is celebrated on Akshaya Tritiya.
- The beginning of Treta Yuga, according to several traditions.
- The Akshaya Patra โ tradition holds that Lord Krishna gave the Pandavas, through Draupadi, the never-empty vessel during their exile.
- Sudama's visit to Krishna โ the poor Brahmin friend who brought a handful of flattened rice and returned home to find his poverty gone.
- The opening of the Char Dham โ the Gangotri and Yamunotri temples traditionally open for the year on Akshaya Tritiya.
- In the Jain tradition, it is the day Lord Rishabhdev broke his long fast with sugarcane juice.
One of the sade-teen muhurat
In Maharashtra and many other regions, Akshaya Tritiya is one of the "three and a half" self-auspicious days, together with Gudi Padwa, Vijayadashami and (the half day) Bali Pratipada after Diwali. On these days important work can begin without consulting a separate muhurat.
Akshaya Tritiya puja vidhi
The main worship of the day is of Lord Vishnu with Goddess Lakshmi.
- Wake early, bathe and wear clean clothes, preferably yellow.
- Set up a chowki with a yellow cloth and place Vishnu and Lakshmi (or a Shaligram and a picture of Lakshmi) on it, with a kalash.
- Take the sankalp with water, akshat and flowers in your hand.
- Offer water, panchamrit, chandan, yellow flowers and tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu, and haldi-kumkum, flowers and a chunri to Goddess Lakshmi.
- Offer barley (jau) or wheat, chana dal and seasonal fruits; many families also offer and later donate sattu.
- Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Shri Suktam, or chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.
- Perform aarti and share prasad.
- Do daan โ the most emphasised act of the day.
What to donate on Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya falls in the heat of summer, so traditional daan focuses on relief from heat and hunger:
- An earthen pot (matka) filled with water, or arranging drinking water for people and birds
- Hand fans, umbrellas and footwear
- Grain, sattu, jaggery and seasonal fruits
- Clothes, and food for the needy or for cows
What to buy or begin
- Gold or silver is the best-known custom, as a symbol of lasting prosperity.
- New beginnings โ a business, a shop, an investment, a vehicle, or moving into a new home.
- Learning โ starting a course, a new practice or a spiritual discipline.
Akshaya Tritiya for families abroad
- Daan where you live. Donating to a local food bank, a temple's annadanam or a water project carries the spirit of the day just as well.
- Investments and new ventures. Many NRI families choose Akshaya Tritiya to start a new investment, open a business or sign for a home.
- Puja in India. You can book an Akshaya Tritiya Pooja to be performed by our pandits in your name, with the daan made in India on your behalf.
